More Than a Bar. Part of Lawrence.

Long before we began tending gardens or writing cocktail menus, 317 N. 2nd Street had already lived a few lives.

Built as a neighborhood service station, you can still spot pieces of that history if you know where to look. Over the decades, the building evolved alongside North Lawrence itself, eventually becoming the neighborhood gathering place that so many locals came to know simply as The Gaslight.

Today, we consider ourselves caretakers more than owners.

Every regular who has claimed a favorite patio chair, every musician who's played beneath the lights, every bartender who's poured a drink with care, and every guest who's crossed the bridge looking for a place to belong has helped shape what Gaslight has become.

Our name also carries another piece of Lawrence history.

Gaslight Gardens pays homage to the beloved Gaslight Tavern, the campus institution that stood near the University of Kansas until it was destroyed during the unrest of 1970, when the KU Memorial Union was set ablaze amid a turbulent chapter in the city's history. Rather than trying to recreate what was lost, we hope to carry forward the spirit that made it meaningful: a place where conversation, music, community, and a little rebellion could comfortably share the same table.
